Lately I've been using some improivsantional techniques invented by Raymond Roussel, discussed in How I Wrote Certain of My Books. I use words with double meanings and words that chime or rhyme for the opening and closing phrases. It works best with short prose pieces, and I find that if I focus on an emotion, the writing gains more weight.
